BMI predicts a BDP win in 2024 elections

Global research firm Business Monitor International (BMI) has predicted a win for the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in the upcoming general elections scheduled for October 2024. According to BMI’s latest report, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC)’s failure to build a firm coalition will strengthen the BDP’s chances of obtaining a continued parliamentary majority.

BMI says given Botswana’s history of political stability, we expect that risks to social stability will remain muted in the run-up to the election.

“We expect that Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will win the general elections set for October 2024. The recent breakdown in talks between the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) and the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), the main opposition coalition, signals continued splintering within the BDP’s main challenger,” BMI says. It says “This bodes well for the incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who we expect will secure a second presidential term (and the BDP its fourteenth consecutive win).”
