Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving energy landscape and the need to transition to low-carbon technology, the Bank of Botswana (BoB) has spotlighted Botswana’s potential as a key player in the electronic vehicle industry and value chain.
BoB notes that “five of the six key minerals; cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium and graphite, utilised in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles,” are found in Botswana. In a report published recently by the Central Bank, “It is observed that electric vehicle batteries market is poised for growth globally, mainly due to rising demand for renewable energy. This positions Botswana as a potential contributor to the battery materials supply chain and a hub for electric vehicle battery manufacturing.”
