A number of First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) customers who lost millions of Pula to the Ecoplexus ponzi scheme have filed a complaint with the central bank claiming that FNBB was an accessory to fraud and that its banking licence should be revoked. In a letter to the Bank of Botswana, the aggrieved clients stated that; “subsequent to First National Bank of Botswana (FNBB) ‘s role in Ecoplexus fraud and or scam through which we have lost close to Hundred and Fifty Thousand Pula (P150 000.00) .”
They added that; “we are hereby sincerely requesting yourselves to revoke their operating license in terms of Banking Act of 1995′ Section Section 11 (1) (viii) thereof.” They argued that “the reasons for same are outlined here below as well as particular order it is our firm opinion that FNBB have failed to protect us together with its other innocent voiceless clients and or Ecoplexus victims.” They accused the commercial bank of “having actively aided the Ecoplexus fraudsters which automatically makes them an accessory to the Ecoplexus fraud and or scam.” The clients claim that FNBB “ failed to protect us from a daylight crime as their loyal Customers that they always address as “Valuable”” “Having contravened the following clauses of Botswana Bankers Code of Conduct amongst others; we the subscribers to this code will endeavour to have safe, secure and reliable banking and payment systems. “Banks will assist in protecting their clients against fraud,”.
