Botswana has joined neighbouring South Africa in the battle against illegal mining as a Zimbabwean illegal gold miner is feared dead. This was after the man was reported to have been trapped under a rock in a disused mine near Matsiloje village, approximately 30 kilometers from Francistown.
Authorities have confirmed that the search for the 33-year-old man has been halted due to safety concerns. The incident occurred in an area notorious for illegal mining activity, which has surged in recent years, costing the country millions in unregulated gold trade and environmental damage.
