Botswana Oil needs to take a long re-look at its model

Over the recent past there has been excitement in the air that Botswana Oil is out to empower citizens and take away business from the multinationals that have dominated the oil industry since forever.

That excitement might actually be misplaced.

The truth of the matter is that Botswana Oil now enjoys new monopoly. It also disempowers citizens.

This state owned company now imports well over 90 percent of petroleum products.

Regulations at BERA, the regulator were amended effectively to allow Botswana Oil to be a defacto monopoly.
