Botswana teams on course for world championships

After an incredible performance resulting in them claiming gold medals at the World Championship Qualifiers, both ladies and men’s teams’ spirits are high as the team is set to conquer the other champions from the other Zone 6 Group K.

Team Botswana returned on Sunday afternoon and the next phase of World Championship Qualifiers games will be played in October and November this year. Botswana will host the second stage in October for men, while the women’s will be hoisted in Zambia in the same month.┬á Only two top countries in the stage will qualify for the final round to determine Africa’s slot in January 2014.

Team Botswana, both ladies and men, won all their games. With the men’s team only conceding a set on their last game against Mozambique, after keeping a clean sheet on their first two games.

In men, Botswana win-loss ratio was 3-0 to win the 4 nations championship, leaving host Mozambique at second position with 2-1. On third position is Lesotho with 1-3. These three have already secured their places at the zonal phase of the World Championship qualifier.

The ladies team of Botswana kept a clean sheet, winning all games and not conceding any set. In the rankings for ladies on the first is Botswana, second position is Swaziland. The last team to qualify for the zonal stage is Mozambique on third place.

Individual awards were also bestowed on some best performers and those who raised Botswana’s flag high were the Most Valuable Player, Happy Ribbin (men), Best Setter, Tiyapo Madeluka (Men) and Best Block Temogo Moetse (men). Botswana ladies who were at their best at these qualifiers were Gaoleseletse Gasegongwe (Most Valuable Player), Kelebogile Mahupela (Best Setter), Tracy Chaba (Best Blocker).

“It is a long way to the World Championship but we are looking forward to them….our eyes are looking at the mountains,” said Senior Sports Development Officer, Mission Mereyotlhe. Mereyotlhe said.

He said that he was confident that Team Botswana will repeat their Mozambique performance, despite the tougher opponents.
