With just over two weeks before the beginning of October, which has been designated the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cancer Association of Botswana (CAB) has lined up a number of public activities to raise awareness about its work and the disease.
The planned activities include the Pink Champaign Breakfast, which will be hosted every Friday morning, the Pink Mornings at Gaborone’s major shopping malls of Riverwalk, Airport Junction, Rail Park and Game City every Saturday morning and the Think Pink Afternoons that will be in the dikgotla in Tlokweng, Mogoditshane and Old Naledi where cancer survivors will share their experiences.
The highlight of the month-long activities will be the Stiletto Walk on October 27.
This year, CAB’s cancer awareness drive is being complemented by a local health and fitness organisation Tshwaragano Adventure Club, whose members will undertake an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro later this month. The 10-member expedition’s drive to reach Africa’s highest peak is meant to raise cancer awareness, as well as funds for CAB.
The expedition has received enthusiastic support from a number of companies that have pledged varying amounts of sponsorship. As it presently stands, the list of sponsors includes Naledi Motors, Motor Centre, BCL, Morupule Colliery, AT&C Engineers + Contractors, G4S, Puma Energy, CPP Botswana, Bothakga Burrow, Petro Logistics, Willy Kathurima Associates, Lobatse Gas Works, Eastern Tyres, Letshego, Botswana Couriers, Botswana Post, Akanyang Skinner Associates, and Master Timber.
