Cash crunch tests UDC’s human rights promise

The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) entered office promising a rights-based approach to governance. Less than two years later, a deep fiscal crisis is forcing  difficult trade-offs, raising questions about whether economic reality is overtaking political ideals.

A new report has warned that Botswana government has effectively pulled the plug on civil society organisations (CSOs) by cutting financial support to key organisations at a time when Botswana is facing worsening economic pressures, rising unemployment, poverty and social challenges.
