Mochudi Centre Chiefs on Saturday halted Nico’s impressive run as it walloped them 3-0 at Molepolole Sports complex.
Nico has, since the beginning of the Be-Mobile premier league, sent shock waves through the football fraternity as it won all three of all its matches played in the past weeks.
Taking into consideration that last season Nico United dented Centre Chiefs hopes of defending their title, a more fierce battle was expected.
Centre Chiefs were also pressurized by the fact that they had only played a game in which they drew with BDF XI; they had to collect maximum points. The encounter was a battle of wills and physical display.
Chiefs, who finished second last season, were desperate while Nico wanted to protect its record and prove its determination to lift the highly revered Be Mobile cup.
Centre Chiefs’ Sekhana ‘Chicken’ Koko scored a brace for the Kgatleng side midway into the first half while he scored the other deep into the second half.
Moemedi Moatlhaping scored the last goal of the match for Magosi before the referee sent the boys from the mining town of Selebi Phikwe on a long trip back home.
Moatlhaping got in after Mpho Mabogo’s substitution in the second half.
Chiefs’ playmaker, Dirang Moloi, despite not scoring, was in super form as he created good crosses for both Koko and Moatlhaping. Despite losing the hotly contested game, Nico showed that they are a force that can’t be ignored. Their Zimbabwean import, Tendai “Fire” Ndoro, was a thorn in Centre Chiefs deface and were it not for Given Mpundu and Tshepo Motlhabankwe’s clearances, the Zimbabwean national could have scored a goal or two for his side.
Nico have played four games so far, garnering 6 points while Chiefs have played two games with four points.
