Heeding the President’s appeal to the business community to donate to the poor, the Chinese community in Botswana came together to establish an association that is committed to handing out blankets during winter season every year.
On Monday, the Charitable Association of Chinese in Botswana donated 1000 blankets worth P150 000 to the President Charitable Fund.
When receiving the donation on behalf of the Office of the President, Colonel Duke Masilo said that he is quite pleased with the participation of the Chinese community in Botswana.
He said that the Chinese had expressed their compassion by pledging to build over 120 houses and participating in other presidential initiative, such as the Housing Appeal.
Masilo stated that the newly-formed Chinese Association had shown signs of helping the needy as they have already volunteered to help give Nkoyaphiri Clinic a facelift.
“I am also informed that they are planning to launch the Warm winter donation, which will be an annual event,” he said.
He further said that it is interesting that many companies have come together to form charitable associations and added that he hoped that others would follow suit.
The Chairman of the Association, Miles Nan, said that Batswana should be assured that the Chinese are not in Botswana to generate income only but will continue to extend a helping hand to the needy and the less privileged members of the society.
“Though this is not enough, we are happy because we are doing this from our hearts. We want to have this annually as we will be launching the Warm Winter Donation by the Chinese in Botswana,” said Nan.
He thanked all the companies that contributed to the donation.
