The Commissioner of Prisons and Rehabilitation, Herman Kau, will be dropped from his position and a high ranking serving member of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) appointed to replace him ÔÇô Sunday Standard has been informed.
It is understood that Kau will be appointed Disaster Management Officer, which falls under the Office of the President.
His deputy, Mrs. Masire, has being deployed to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for a two-year stint.
This follows after a power struggle between the two bosses became more frequent and, in turn, affecting officers’ discipline and the daily running of the prison services.
Sometime last year, the ministry appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate the power struggles between the two bosses and the reports recommended that both the commissioner and the deputy be redeployed to other ministries.
However, about 22 senior officers are likely to be expelled from work after it emerged recently that most of the inmates had not been finger printed.
When contacted, the permanent secretary to the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, Segakweng Tsiane, said, “This is a very sensitive matter, therefore, I am not in a good position to comment on it.”
