Council in public private partnership to construct shopping mall in Kanye

The Southern District Council has joined forces with a local company, Saga Investments in a Private Public Partnership to construct a multi million pula shopping center in Mahube ward, Kanye. This was disclosed by the Council’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Thapelo Timuno in an interview with Sunday Standard.

“We are pleased to announce that our public private partnership with Saga Investments to construct a shopping complex will start very soon,” he said.

He declined to state how much the project will cost, saying their partners are against giving out such information. He however said the shopping complex will be very big as it will also change Mahube ward and provide employment opportunities.

“The mall will provide residents with services that they currently have to source from as far as Gaborone,” he said.

The mall will also have a filling station, which is already under construction. Other buildings will follow soon afterwards.

“We are glad that we are doing what the government has directed Councils to do; which is to look for private sector companies that we can go into business with for the purpose of providing services to residents of our village and surrounding areas,” said Timuno.

He further explained that the Council’s partnership with the private investor will run for 25 years, after which the mall will be wholly owned by the Southern District Council.
