Dear Mokgatla: The painful truth you must know

Without sounding pessimistic, without pre-empting the outcome of the petition made in good faith by you, without questioning your relentless spirit, without undermining your hope, and without undermining the discretionary powers vested in the President of the Republic, I know cognitively that my King will not come back. Not now, maybe NEVER even. This is premised on a myriad of factors that unfolded in the past four years, and more especially on a negotiated settlement based on pressure and empathy by this government.

If he comes back I will be the first one to scream in the streets. I know that my King left the country voluntarily, he did not run away. I think he needs a little bit of respect here. The King cannot run away, for what, why? Following the expose of the gravity of corruption in the entire area of his jurisdiction called Pilanesburg, particularly the capital Moruleng the King publicly announced the urgent need to go to South Africa. I know that my king, having fought gallantly in a failed but protracted constitutional challenge against the State, he saw no need to fight anymore because the state had disrespected its own court orders!

My King decided voluntarily, to focus on the bigger picture, his people, and our mineral and tourism wealth in South Africa, where he is busy fighting another major sophisticated battle against a criminal syndicate masquerading as politicians, who have bought most of our Dikgosana. These Dikgosana are on a secret payroll of scheming politicians. I know having read every single piece the King wrote publicly, and perhaps privately, having attended most of the kgotla meetings, I know it will not be easy for the King to come back. And I understand fully his position and principle. The point here is that we should in the meantime; especially the youth of Botswana generally focus on fighting this government at the polls in October, because under the current system, only desperate Chiefs and cowards would be pliable to sell out. Under this regime, criminals and cowards we grew up with, and those who grew up with our parents have suddenly become men of honour, rich and arrogant, to the extent that they no longer know their King! This is beyond blasphemy, I warn you.

The truth is that my King would not accept to live under this constitution anymore, it is archaic, is a fraudulent and obsolete document. My king would not be able to work with or under ministers who do not respect Kings. Knowing this government, your petition may not even bother them. It may not be as urgent as the Francistown petition of the DEAD that postponed an election. Look, they are arrogant; they may not even entertain it altogether. After elections, should they win, Botswana will become the most painful country for you for the next five years; Mochudi will become another Gaza Strip, painful. I know and I take pride in my King’s rejection of any government overtures to bring him back based on a fraudulently negotiated settlement. I remain hopeful that the King will live long enough, and in the end, his fight for justice will be realized by you and I at the polls. If we do not achieve this in our lifetime, God forbid, it is still OK with me. One day, our children would be able to deal with this matter candidly and progressively.

The parting short is, for now, the focus should be in the change of government which would deliver a new constitution that frees all of us from the monstrous powers of a single individual called The President. Myself, and I speak for myself here, I shall not kneel before any President, this one included, or any in the future, to ask for forgiveness or decide the fate of my King for that would relegate my King to a subject.

Yours in pain Olebile-Sikwane,
Mosanta
