Medical practitioners have called out BOMAID for alleged human rights abuses over a decision to deny chronic patients the right to choose their preferred health providers.
Following reports carried exclusively in the Sunday Standard, the Medical Practitioners Group of Botswana wrote a letter to Botswana Medical Aid Society (BOMAID) to explain media reports that it has sent out forms to potential designated service providers for purposes of signing contracts.
In a strongly worded letter dated 19th December 2023 addressed to BOMAID, and copied to the Ministry of Health and Botswana Health Professions Council, Chairperson of Medical Practitioners Group of Botswana Dr Refilwe Mothibamele said; “I write to articulate our profound objections and apprehensions regarding BOMAID’s pursuit of formalized contractual arrangements with private medical practitioners under the Designated Provider Network framework, as elucidated in the communication dated 11 December 2023, with a prospective commencement on 1 January 2024.”
