Botswana’s progress toward the United Nations goal of inclusive and equitable education is being tested not simply by how many children enter secondary school, but by how many remain, advance and receive support to complete their education.
Secondary-school enrolment rose 2.8% to 190,453 students in 2021, according to Statistics Botswana, with girls accounting for 51.8% of enrolment. The increase offers evidence of expanded access, but the data also expose gaps that complicate the country’s push toward Sustainable Development Goal 4, which calls for inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.
