When it comes to establishment, Jwaneng Galaxy may be a relatively new team but a scary one at that.
The Jwaneng based outfit is only 9 years old, having been established in 2014. Despite this, the side has already found its footing in the African football.
Galaxy made its debut in the continent’s elite CAF champions league competition 3 years ago. Despite this, the team has been doing well, knocking out power houses of African football from the prestigious club champions.
Under Morena Ramoreboli’s guidance, Galaxy has now reached the group stages of the CAF Champions league for the second time in three years. In their maiden season in the continental showpiece.
They became the country’s second club after Township Rollers to reach group stages. Now, they are the only Botswana side to have reached the stage two times.
En-route to the group stages this season, Galaxy downed some of the continent’s renowned powerhouses. Among the teams that have suffered humiliation at the hands of Galaxy include the Tanzanian powerhouse, Simba FC defeating, who they defeated 3 -1. 1995 CAF championships League winners, Orlando Pirates were next to be knocked out from the ongoing competition as Galaxy marched to the group stages.
On Saturday, Lesagaripana, as Galaxy is commonly called by its die-hard supporters claimed the skull of one of the power house in their first match of group stage. They took a long flight to Morocco where they met the Wydad AC, the finalists of the median African Club Association (ACA) league. The league is played by top eight teams in Africa. The boys from Jwaneng Township are now leading group B with 3 points followed by ASEC and Simba having played 1 all draw in their encounter. Wydad is at the bottom of the four teams in the group with no point after the humiliation by Galaxy in their own back yard.
The team’s impressive performance in the preliminary stage made them to shift targets. They initially set themselves a target of reaching group stages performance in CAF champions League Africa,
In earlier interview, Tankiso Morake, Galaxy’s mouthpiece observed that the team has been consistent both in the league and CAF participation hence reaching the group stages.
“We reached the Group stages out of hard work and we are in the group stage not to add numbers but to compete and make a mark. We are targeting the quarter finals,” he said.
On Saturday, Galaxy host Tanzanian side, Simba at Obed Itani Stadium in Francistown. The home team after winning their opining group stage match they are expected to be motivated by the home fans.
Galaxy is drawn in Group B with Group B Wydad AC (Morocco), Simba SC (Tanzania) and ASEC Mimosas (Cote d Ivoire).
