The Minister of Justice, Ronald Shamukuni, will find himself in a snake pit next week when he has to defend the government’s decision to hire Gerrie Nel, a South African super lawyer who works for a white supremacist organisation called AfriForum. The Jwaneng-Mabutsane MP, Mephato Reatile, has given notice to ask Shamukuni if the government still retains Nel’s services “in the so-called Butterfly Case.’”
Nel came to international prominence in 2014 when he served as lead prosecutor in the trial of Oscar Pistorius, a leading South African runner who himself gained such prominence when he became the first athlete with a disability to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He was accused of murdering Reeva Steenkamp, his girlfriend, in a fit of rage. He also faced several gun-related charges.
