The reasons behind the controversial acquisition of Tautona Lodge by the government continue to change. Initially touted as a strategic move to harness the economic and environmental potential of the sand veldt, the government has now pivoted to a different narrative. The explanation offered by vice president Slumber Tsogwane this week was a complete departure from the one given by Minister of State President Kabo Moraweng in 2021.
Tsogwane was responding to a series of questions by John Thiite, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ghanzi North. Thiite sought clarity on the government’s intentions for the property. His questions were pointed, focusing on the size of the farm, ongoing activities at the lodge, and the potential benefits of the acquisition to the local community and the broader Western region. He also inquired about the possibility of decentralizing key agricultural institutions to the region and whether part of the farm could be allocated for the expansion of the Ghanzi Township.
