Govt faces “Lie by Omission” over electricity tariff hike

The government through the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security’s appears to have lied by omission following its recent social media statement denying any imminent electricity tariff hikes.

On Monday, the Ministry posted on Facebook a message dismissing a story carried by Sunday Standard as “FAKE NEWS,” claiming: “No electricity tariff hike soon. Members of the public are reminded that on the 1st July 2025, Government decreased electricity tariffs for domestic consumers, with consumption up to 200 kWh receiving a 30% tariff reduction.” The statement also added that “ The adjustment was meant to ensure that electricity is affordable to all income groups and that BPC is able to meet its operational obligations. For this reason, Government has no plans to reverse the adjustments.”
