International scam callers operating from Botswana

Scam callers are operating from Botswana from where they target international victims as far afield as the United Kingdom, the British government has revealed.

The Office of Communications, which is the government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom commonly known as Ofcom has warned British nationals to look out from unknown numbers from Botswana, Guinea and Guyana where the scam callers are believed to be currently operating from.

Ofcom revealed that that in the summer of 2021, 45million people were targeted by scam callers and texts, with a number of increasingly elusive tricks to keep an eye out for. According to the consumer advice organisation, the big four in 2023 come in the form of ‘number spoofing’, ‘missed call scams’, ‘coronavirus scam calls and texts’ and ‘Wangiri scams’.
