A local football analyst has weighed in on the appointment of Zebras head coach, Didier Gomes da Rosa saying his major hurdle will be to put into gear non-functioning youth structures.
Jimmy George sharing his view on the new coach’s appointment said: “It is not about the coach or those who came before him. The main issue is what is it that can make the coach achieve? Structures that were going to allow him to work are not there.”
George observed that the junior structures that are pivotal in development and success of the national teams are not functioning.
“Looking at what is on the ground the mission will be impossible for him to bring glory. The junior teams have not been playing regularly. To be fair they are not there. The coach will only achieve if structures are smooth sailing. I don’t see him doing anything extra ordinary. Like I said it is not about the coach, those who came before him failed not because they are not good but they failed because of what is on the ground. Without junior structures the nation must forget of coach doing wonders,” he advised.
He said the Botswana Football Association (BFA) must have a calendar of events for all national teams and make sure they honour FIFA week by playing international friendly matches to expose young players.
He advised that the BFA must make sure the junior teams play regularly and compete internationally.
The other undoing for the coach will be the “uninspiring league that does not have a sponsor.
“The league has three years/seasons without a sponsor. We can’t anticipate players to be competitive when they get nothing at the end from the league,” he observed.
He observed that the past immediate coach, Mogomotsi Mpote’s major undoing was the absence of structures and the new coach is going to face that same problem.
“We are going to keeping on firing and hiring without addressing the problem. Coaches come and go and the situation remains the same. Until structures are resuscitated they won’t be any progress,” he opined.
“The coach is going to see robust development teams and create a stronger feeder team for the national team. He has to ensure continuous development programmes that will see players retained across all national teams” “The coach is expected to turn the team around and change the attitude into wining mentality. The coach’s major task is to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of nations,” said BFA president Letshwiti on Rosa’s mandate.
