The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime is investigating allegations of corruption at the Southern District Council, in which council employees connived with Kanye businessmen to swindle government of millions of Pula.
Two council employees working in the transport management division are already in custody, and more are expected to follow as investigations continue.
The SDC Assistant Council Secretary Innocent Leonard said that they conducted an internal audit after suspicions arose that the council’s vehicles were being used in a corruption scam in which some council employees teamed up with some garages to swindle government. The DCEC has already identified the garages that are implicated.
“We started smelling a rat after receiving a purchase order involving council motor vehicles” said Leonard.
He added that they then called the DCEC to assist them with investigations. According to Leonard, this is not the first time that the SDC has been hit by corruption.
DCEC Public Relations Officer Lentswe Motshoganetsi confirmed the investigations, adding, “two employees of SDC are already in custody as they are in the centre of DCEC investigations.”
