Former President Ian Khama appears to have mended relations with China following years of strained ties, as he welcomed a courtesy call from Chinese Ambassador Fan Yong recently.
Khama’s relationship with China was anything but cordial during and after his presidency, largely due to his stance on the Dalai Lama. While in office, he defied Beijing’s expectations by inviting and later visiting the Tibetan spiritual leader—moves that China, which upholds the One China Policy, strongly opposed.
