Kicking the can down the road is not an option

For the sake of Botswana’s future, we remain hopeful that the diamond market will bounce back in 2025 in line with the predictions of those who know a thing or two about that business. 

However, we have to be realistic and recognise simultaneously that a rebound in the diamond business if it does happen would not be the magic bullet for our economic ailments. This hard reality therefore urges us to execute the long-standing structural reforms that we have always chosen to defer. Many commentators at the local and international levels have repeatedly advised us to embark on these structural economic reforms, which must simply be understood to refer to the things that the government does and how it does them.  For the government of Botswana, there is a myriad of things which need to change to put us on strong footing for growth.
