Klipdrift windfall spectacular for Sunday soccer

Sunday soccer social teams have received a major boost from Distell Botswana through their brand, Klipdrift and Cola.

The soccer teams, mostly from main centers in Botswana, are expected to participate in a tournament dubbed “Klipdrift and Cola Soccer Spectacular”, which kick-started over the weekend in Jwaneng.

The tournament in Jwaneng created a series of tournaments that will be held in major centres in the country.  The spectacular will be the first ever tournament for Sunday soccer social soccer.

It kick-started last week on Sunday in Jwaneng where four teams from Jwaneng, Lobatse and Kanye battled for first position. Diphashasha from Jwaneng won the tournament.

Organisers of the tournament are optimistic that their involvement will drive the momentum of the existing Sunday soccer football culture in Botswana. In an interview, Distell Botswana Managing Director, Kutlo Motshubi, indicated that they got involved after they realised that Sunday social soccer football in Botswana was growing in leaps and bounds.  

“Since it was becoming a culture, we saw it fit to align ourselves with it. We looked at the brands that we have and we saw it fit to align our brand ‘Klipdrift and Cola’ with Sunday social soccer.┬á We are hopeful that even our brand can also grow through the Sunday social soccer,” said Motshubi.

He stated that the tournament pits 4 of the biggest Sunday Soccer Teams in an area, who will play a one day tournament, knock out type.

“We do a draw/toss in the morning and then have a semi final and a final in one day.┬áIt’s a winner-takes-all with the victorious team walking away with a full All Kasi Klipridft and Cola branded Soccer Kit. Because alcohol is not allowed to sponsor sport in this country, all teams have to be non-affiliates of the BFA or any of its formal structures and all players cannot be registered players with the BFA or the Premier League in Botswana,” added Motshubi.

He said that if this year’s tournaments prove to be a success, the company intends to have them as an annual event. ┬á

Motshubi also stated that so far the teams have welcomed the initiative.
