There is a liquidity crisis in the country’s banking sector.
And because the banks are running so low in cash, with their reserves at their lowest, they have been let exposed, less able to deal with the ongoing turbulence.
The Bank of Botswana has in the recent passed relaxed its muscle somewhat by lowering the capital requirements on the banks.
But that has not eased the crisis experienced by commercial banks.
