Veteran defender Boitumelo Mafoko’s swansong year got even better as he was named Jwaneng Galaxy’s Player of the Season.
The defender beat a strong competition from fellow nominees Thabang Sesinyi and team goalkeeper Anthony Gouws to nab the awards’ most prestigious accolade.
As the biggest winner of the night, Mafoko walked away with a trophy as well as P5 000 prize money.
Mafoko, who hanged his boots at the end of the just ended football season, was crowned during the team’s end of season awards.
The awards, which were graced by the who’s who of Jwaneng mining town as well as local football, were held at the Jwaneng’s Debswana Club this past Friday
The award was the second for Mafoko, with the defender already having nabbed the Mascom Top 8 Player of the Tournament earlier this year.
Mafoko’s coronation underpinned his importance in the Galaxy set-up after he led the team to the Mascom Top 8 glory on its debut and also helping it to finish second in the BTC Premiership league in what was the team’s most successful season.
Another notable winner was team Gouws, who was named the team’s Supporters Player of the season.
The award, which was voted for by the team supporters, was the third for the player this season.
Gouws has already nabbed the Mascom Top 8 and the BTC Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season.
In other awards, Gilbert Baruti was named the Most Improved Player, Thabo Leinanyane the Players’ Player of the Season while Thero Setsile was the team’s Top Goalscorer.
The awards marked the end of a very successful season for Galaxy, who have now seen a number of their players roped into the Botswana football national team, the Zebras.
Other winners of the night included team manager Odirile Masuge and Youth Development coach Kagiso Gabasiane, who shared the Chairman’s Award.
Another notable award was the President’s Award, which was given to team supporters Letlhogonolo Mapoka and Martha Mokganya.
