Police in Tlokweng are investigating a 24-year-old man who is alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old girl.
The incident, which occurred last week, came to light after the teenager, a Standard 7 pupil at one of the local Primary Schools, was found in possession of a cellular phone in her school bag.
Upon questioning by the parents, the child revealed that she had been given the phone so she would not tell her parents that she had been defiled.
The mother reported the case to the police and the suspect was arrested after questioning.
The Station Commander, Superintendent Lebalang Maniki, confirmed the incident that they went to arrest the culprit over the reported allegations of defilement of the child.
“I can not disclose the findings as we continue to investigate the suspect but I can only say we think the suspect has abused the child not for the first time,” said Maniki.
He explained that they detained the suspect for 48 hours before they could release him on condition that he does not disturb investigations or interfere with witnesses.
“It does not mean that because we have released him he is free; after collecting evidence we take the case to court or to the Directorate of Public Prosecution and we also have our own police prosecutors to assist,” said Maniki.
He stated that even if the child agreed to the act, it is still defilement, adding that they are waiting for medical tests.
The mother of the girl, however, says the police are dragging their feet and are not updating her on the case.
