The 2018 Mascom President’s Concert will take place on Tuesday, November 27th at Maitisong. Sponsored by Mascom, this annual concert is a charitable event organized by Maitisong to raise funds for the less privileged members of society.
Titled Thari Ya Sechaba: A Legend’s Legacy, this year’s Concert tells the story of The Mother of a Nation, a legend whose legacy remains in the hearts of those she has left behind, through dance, drama, story-telling, poetry and music.
The evening is about recognizing and appreciating the people who, through their service to our nation, have made positive impacts. We hope to inspire our audience to remember these legends, as well as to introspect and think about the legacy that they will leave behind.
BACKGROUND: This noble initiative started in the 1990s, through the influence of Sir Ketumile Masire, former President of Botswana, and Mr David Slater, former Director of Maitisong, to support the governments care of vulnerable communities.
The President’s Concert attracts hundreds of spectators annually, including heads of state, parliamentarians, members of the diplomatic corps, top executives from the private sector and members of the public.
Mascom’s involvement with the President’s Concert began in 2007, with a donation of P10,000 during President Festus Mogae’s tenure. Over the past eleven years, this figure has grown and benefited organizations such as Stepping Stones International, Ray of
Hope Foundation, Masisi Organ Foundation, Diphalana Counselling Centre, Lady Olebile Masire Foundation and Sekolo Sa Anne Stine.
In 2017, the concert was renamed the Mascom President’s Concert to honor Mascom’s contributions.
PERFORMERS: This year’s production will feature poetry, story-telling, dance and a variety of musical elements including choral, marimba and live instruments. The Concert’s Directors are Tefo Paya (Creative) and Laone Thekiso (Music). Headlined by the talented Samantha Mogwe, the concert will also feature four vocalists, ten musicians and twenty dancers. The entire cast is full of young, passionate and talented artists who have come together in a setting best described as follows:
“Kgotla ya badiragatsi: ko go kopanang beng ba Morafe le beng ba Sechaba. Botlhe ba lefatshe leno la rona, botlhe ba ba tlang ko Kgotleng ya Badiragatsi ba amogelwa ka lerato.”
