In a statement that shocked many people, a visiting Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa stood up and announced that he and his host president Mokgweetsi Masisi had just agreed that henceforth travel between their two countries would be by way of identity cards and not passports.
Batswana did not like it.
Quite rightly they thought this was the opening of floodgates.
It took only a few days before reports came in that Zimbabweans were at the border gate waiting to get in – armed not with passports but with their identity cards.
