Merafhe faces tough 2007

Foreign Affairs Minister, Lt Gen Mompati Merafhe’s job for 2007 is going to be more about fire fighting and less of holding up Botswana’s record as the country faces three human rights violation cases at the African Human Rights Commission.

The First case has been filed by Professor Kenneth Good’s lawyers, who argue that his deportation from Botswana was unconstitutional. Professor Good, a political science lecturer at the University of Botswana and strong critic of government, was two years ago bundled out of the country without government giving him any explanation.

Ditshwananelo Human Rights Organization, who are contesting a recent execution, has filed the second case. Ditshwanelo has been locked in a running fight with government against capital punishment.
The third case has been filed by Lydia Nyathi Ramahobo on behalf of Kamanakao Organization.
