Mogae pleads with Basarwa to delay return to CKGR

President Festus Mogae has pleaded with Basarwa of New Xade not to return into the Central Kalahari Game Reserve until after he has had a meeting with them at New Xade.

The meeting is scheduled for next week.
According to information released by President Mogae’s Press Secretary, Dr Jeff Ramsay, the President will travel to New Xade on Thursday to address a Kgotla meeting.

This follows a court judgment in December last year, which essentially ruled that government, had unconstitutionally removed Basarwa from the CKGR.
Since the judgment, government has been extending olive branches of reconciliation to Basarwa, starting with a statement by the Attorney General, Dr Athaliah Molokomme, immediately after judgment that government would not appeal.
Sources inside government say the President would try to reason with Basarwa in New Xade to stay put while giving them the option to choose for themselves.

“No formal communication has been received by Government to the effect that a return is to take place today [Friday],” said a statement from Ramsay, adding that all reports to that effect are based on a press release by Survival International in London.

“His Excellency the President has appealed to members of the community at New Xade to delay their return to the CKGR until after he has met with them at the New Xade kgotla next Thursday,” adds the statement.
