Gaborone United (GU) goalkeeper trainer Thabo ‘Mahala’ Motang has rubbished reports that he is headed back to his childhood club Township Rollers. According to sources, Motang held closed door meetings with senior officials from Rollers in the recent past and it is a matter of time before he returns at the club he left under dark cloud in March 2013.
Motang who joined the Reds in October last year said; “there is no truth in those reports and I’m not worried because people are allowed to say whatever they want. All I can tell you is that i’m still with GU.” Since he arrived at the club, Motang has been showered with lots of praises for the good job he has done with the club’s goalkeepers. Those in the know said the rise of goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko is as a result of Motang. His contract with the club came to an end in the just ended season. The soft-spoken goalkeeper trainer left Rollers after falling out of favour with the then executive committee which was led by businessman Somerset Gobuiwang.┬á
“Rollers have made contact with Mahala and he is expected to rejoin the club soon. When he left Rollers it was not by choice as he was pushed. Since he left Rollers our goalkeepers are not sharp. After the good job he has done at GU in the past season, the management felt that there was a need to bring him here,” said a source. When contacted for comment, GU secretary Herbert Letsebe said though the executive has not taken any decision on the outgoings and incomings for the next season, there is no doubt that they will keep Motang. “He has done a tremendous job since he came here, even the blind can see. Even if there is going to be any restructuring in the technical team, he is not going to be affected. We value him so much and even the supporters are happy with his contribution,” said Letsebe.
On other matters, Letsebe has dismissed reports that former national Under-23 coach Keitumetse ‘Pio’ Paul will be joining the club very soon as an assistant coach. “We’re not aware of such a move because we’ve not discussed it as the executive committee. At the moment, we’re waiting for the coach (Rahman Gumbo) to present his report to us and it is only then that a number of things will be discussed,” said Letsebe.
