A bipartisan parliamentary tag team has raised questions about the suspect manner in which the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships offered by the Indian High Commission have historically been awarded.
The issue was first raised by the Sefhare-Ramokgonami MP, Dr. Kesitegile Gobotswang in February this year when responding to the budget request from the Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr. Douglas Letsholathebe, for the 2024/25 financial year. Gobotswang alleged that applicants from the Gabane-Mankgodi and Kanye South constituencies were the only ones benefitting from these scholarships.
“Are applicants from these constituencies the most intelligent in the whole country?” asked Gobotswang rhetorically. “That can’t be and I want a detailed explanation about what is happening.”
