Nkashi: Race for the Okavango

Mational Geographic Society (NGS) will host a special screening of Nkashi: Race for the Okavango at the Botswana Wild Bird Trust in Maun on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. Another screening will also be held in Gaborone on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at New Capitol Cinema Riverwalk for the press.

Nkashi: Race for the Okavango shows the triumphs and challenges of three mokoro (dugout canoe) polers, celebrates cultural heritage, and illuminates the importance of protecting the Okavango Delta – one of the most unique wetlands in the world. This feature length documentary was made in Botswana, in Setswana, in close collaboration with a team of Batswana filmmakers.

The film follows the challenges and triumphs of three mokoro polers, GB, Pretty, and Ralf. While it was inspired by the annual Nkashi Classic race, Nkashi: Race for the Okavango is about more than a race to become the fastest poler in Ngamiland; it’s also a race to preserve cultural traditions and the waters that sustain the Okavango Delta.
