Orange Money, Botswana’s pioneering mobile money solution on Friday launched a service called “Buy Motlakase”, where customers can use Orange Money to purchase Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) prepaid electricity.
Elisabeth Medou-Badang, Orange Botswana’s CEO said the mobile phone company will strive to provide the market with product and and services that fulfil their needs and make their lives easier adding that they are happy to launch the purchase of prepaid electricity via a mobile money solution.
“Now customers will be able to purchase electricity and reconnect their supply instantly from the comfort of their own homes,” Medou-Badang said.
She pointed out that the service is open to all Orange Money customers and it is accessible 24 hours.
She also explained that to purchase BPC prepaid electricity, customers ought to have money in their Orange Money account and then they simply dial *145*3*3# for direct access to the Prepaid Electricity purchase menu.
“Customers will then access the much needed convenience through selecting “Buy Motlakase” in the Orange Money menu. Similar to all Orange Money services, the BPC Prepaid Electricity purchase is available when roaming,” said Medou-Badang.
Orange Botswana CEO emphasized that Orange Money is an innovative mobile phone-based system that allows customers to carry out simple banking operations and transactions in total security. She added that an array of other existing services on the Orange money portfolio include transferring of funds to any mobile phone subscriber in the country; buying airtime, paying invoices such as Orange bill and DSTV subscriptions, as well as paying school fees and salaries.
“Anyone with a valid ID or passport can register for Orange Money, at any Orange Shops or at any of the Orange dealer networks,” said Medou-Badang.
She observed that the steady increase in the uptake of Orange Money is evidence of the need and significance of mobile money in Botswana and added that the new prepaid electricity purchase service will further increase convenience and security for Orange customers.
