Orange Phikwe Marathon Draws Record Crowd, Boosts Local Economy

The annual Orange National Phikwe Marathon took place this weekend and was hailed a great success, attracting a record turnout. A total of 2,200 runners registered for the event, making it one of the biggest in recent years.

Minister of State President, Moeti Mohwasa, commended Orange Botswana for its continued commitment to sponsoring the marathon. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, community building, and corporate partnerships, noting that Orange’s involvement is contributing meaningfully to the country’s social and economic development.

“Orange Botswana is more than just a phone company — it also helps build the country by supporting sports, new technology, youth empowerment, and business growth,” Mohwasa said.

He added that Orange’s work in Selebi-Phikwe has helped create jobs, grow local businesses, and encourage youth participation in community development. The minister also praised the athletes, calling them shining examples of dedication and resilience. “They run not just for themselves, but also for their communities and for the nation,” he remarked. Speaker of the national assembly Dithapelo Keorapetse was among the dignitaries at the event.

Orange Botswana CEO, Ms. Néné Maïga, echoed the same sentiments, stating that the marathon is more than ‘just a race.’ She said the marathon brings people together with a shared purpose, which is ‘to uplift the economy, foster positive change, and strengthen local communities.’

Participants traveled from various parts of Botswana and even from abroad to take part in the event. Local authorities expressed satisfaction with the smooth running of the marathon and thanked the organizers and sponsors for their efforts.

“The marathon brings business opportunities to Selebi-Phikwe. All our hotels and lodges were fully booked. Restaurants and shops also saw an increase in customers,” said Town Clerk Lawrence Mokotedi. “This event really boosts our local economy,” he observed.

The informal sector, especially hawkers and vendors, also benefited from increased sales during the event. Transport operators — including bus and taxi drivers — reported a profitable day as well.

The Orange Phikwe Marathon has evolved into more than just a sporting event; it has become a significant economic driver and promotional platform for the town. Many are already looking forward to next year’s edition.

In the competitive results, Mema Tiango won the 42.2 km women’s marathon, while Lazarus Too claimed victory in the men’s category. In the half marathon, Mosadikwena and Ebel Chibanda triumphed in the women’s and men’s categories respectively. The 10 km race was won by Tebo Mbe (women) and Onneile Molongwe (men).
