Parliament rejects bill to enhance DCEC Independence

Parliament has rejected an amendment bill presented by the Leader of Opposition Dithapelo Keorapetse to make the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) more independent.

When presenting the bill recently keorapetse emphasized the need to reform the public sector and remove accountability and oversight institutions from the control of the executive.

“Corruption, nepotism, and patronage are endemic in the public sector. They have a debilitating effect on efficiency and service delivery. These problems are traceable to acute deficiencies in leadership and management, and weak systems of accountability and oversight,” Keorapetse said. He said reforming the DCEC is crucial for tackling corruption, which he said, alongside poverty, unemployment, and income inequalities, has become a noticeable feature of Botswana’s economy.
