Penal Beater flogged for panel beating a police officer

A 27-year-old man was this Friday arraigned before the Gaborone West Deputy Customary Court President, Kgosi Aron Setshwane, charged with assaulting a police office with a bottle while on duty on the night of September 13, 2006, at Block 9 in Gaborone.

Keabonang Tsgogo, 27, who works as a panel beater at Automotive Penal Beaters, this week pleaded guilty to the charges of assaulting a police officer.

Keabonang told the court that some men chased him from a beer drinking spot and, on the way to his house, he picked up an empty beer bottle to defend himself. He said he saw a van approaching and one man in civilian clothes got out then he hit the man with the beer bottle thinking that it was the same person who had been chasing him.
He was later arrested after a long chase by the same police officer he had assaulted, together with his work mate.

Keabonang told the court that he was sorry for wounding a police officer who wanted to save him. He asked the court not to send him to prison because his girlfriend would suffer while he was in prison and also, he would lose his job as a panel beater.

Kgosi Setshwane sentenced him to four strokes on the bum and promised a stiff punishment next time.
