Popular gospel muso faces murder charge

A popular gospel singer, who cannot be named because he is a minor, is in police custody following the death of his girlfriend.

The singer, who is a juvenile, appeared briefly before the Broadhurst magistrate court that was held in camera last Thursday.

Sunday Standard investigations reveal that the suspect had a fight with his girlfriend after a night at a public bar.

The suspect allegedly stopped a taxi and tried to jump in but was pulled out by the deceased and another fight broke out. In the heat of the moment, the suspect allegedly pushed the deceased, 22-year-old Refilwe Thojane of Serowe into a trench.

Soon after the deceased fell into the trench, the taxi driver drove away leaving them behind.

It is alleged that the deceased then took an overdose of pills and was rushed to Princess Marina Hospital where she was stabilized and later discharged.

She died a day after the incident and the gospel singer was immediately arrested.

Botswana Police Service Public Relations Officer, senior superintendent Christopher Mbulawa, told Sunday Standard that the police were holding the 17-year-old musician in connection with the death.

He said they are still awaiting a post mortem report to establish the cause of death, adding that they were aware of allegations that the deceased may have overdosed on pills but were still waiting for a post mortem report to confirm the cause of death.

Mbulawa said police investigations were still on-going even though the suspect had already been arraigned before court.
