Rakgare adamant BCP can win general elections without Umbrella

Botswana Congress Party (BCP) Youth League President, Tumiso “Chillyboy” Rakgare is adamant that his party will win the 2019 general elections even without opposition cooperation.

Endorsing his lobby list during a press conference in Francistown for the coming BCP Youth Elective Congress in the second city on Monday, Rakgare asserted that the BCP is enjoying tremendous support from many Batswana as they are yearning for change especially the youth.

┬á“There are some people who have already written our obituary due to our performance in the previous general elections, but they should be warned that BCP is still intact and even stronger. As we are travelling around the country canvassing for support, we have realized the BCP remains strong and relevant. I am confident that we can win the coming 2019 elections without the umbrella cooperation,” he said.

He however said the BCP has always made it clear that it will find a suitable way to cooperate with other suitable parties an issue which will be decided at the BCP July congress. He further said the congress will discuss the issue and make an informed decision.

Rakgare will battle it out for the BCP youth league presidency against Tshegofatso Raditlhokwa at the youth elective congress.

Announcing his lobby list to the press, Rakgare declared their unwavering support for the Party President, Dumelang Saleshando to be re-elected as party president at the coming BCP Congress in July. He also said that they have identified the current Publicity Secretary for the party Taolo Lucas as the best candidate to deputize Saleshando.

“We still feel that our President is the right candidate to be re-elected given his capabilities. He is a hard worker who has contributed immensely to the growth and stability of our party. However, BCP is a democratic party and we are not against anyone challenging Saleshando at the congress for the presidency but our lobby list supports Saleshando as he has been a unifying factor in our party,” he said.

He also said that they support Taolo Lucas to be the deputy president as he has proved his mettle during the elections. He said Lucas is resilient, passionate and a hard worker.

“Although he failed a number of times in the past elections to wrestle the Bobonong constituency from the BDP Member of Parliament, Shaw Kgathi, Lucas has proved to be a valuable candidate more so that his support in the Bobirwa continues to grow,” he said.

Rakgare said that once they are re-elected at the BCP youth elective congress, top of their priority will be recruitment drive or mobilization and building of youth structures across the country. He said in an endeavor to achieve these, the committee and subcommittees will embark on a countrywide tour of regions, constituencies and wards to revive the seemingly weak youth structures.

“We will also hold house to house campaigns, youth political rallies and visit tertiary institutions,” he said.
Among other important issues he said that they will make sure that that they instil confidence in their party members that their President, Saleshando is the right candidate to take their party to greater heights.

“Our team has trust and confidence that the current BCP president is the right candidate to take our movement to a promised land,”

In conclusion he attacked President Ian Khama’s administration on its newly introduced Government Volunteer Scheme (GVS). He said the scheme is an insult to graduates.

“We wish to call on the Khama administration to stop playing games with the lives of our young people. This scheme is a serious insult to young people. What do you expect young people to do with the P600 they will be getting? Our belief is that the BCP remains the only party committed to creating employment for the youth. The minerals that the BDP government continues to export to other countries for processing can create jobs under the BCP government,” he said.
