Gaborone based lawyer, Tebogo Sebego is at the centre of investigations by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) and the Serious Crimes Squad.
A popular socialite, Sebego, who is the President of Botswana Football Association (BFA), is also under investigation for fraud by the Serious Crimes Squad.
The DCEC is investigating his lavish lifestyle. Detective Senior Superintendent, Richard Baraedi of the Serious Crimes Squad confirmed to The Telegraph that they are investigating Sebego for fraud.
However, he could not give further information on the matter, saying he didn’t want to compromise investigations.
“The Law Society of Botswana is assisting us with information that can strengthen our investigations,” he said.
The LSB recently found Sebego guilty of professional misconduct and fined him P7, 500 after his former client, Agnes Duduzile Brook filed a complaint accusing the attorney of abuse of office. In August 2007, Brook and her husband engaged Sebego to represent them and later paid him P20, 000 for his services, which they said he failed to account for. In its findings, the LSB said Sebego was wrong to charge his clients for court appearances when he had failed to show up in court.
Reached for comment, Sebego denied any knowledge of the investigations.
“I am not aware that this matter has now been reported to the police,” he said.
He added that the investigations were instigated by hatred from people who want to pull him down.
“They are fabricating stories in a bid to discredit me. This is heartbreaking. I am losing business because of such baseless stories,” he said. His defense counsel Busang Manewe said his client has instructed him to review the verdict of the Law Society. “We are waiting for the Law Society to give us a record of proceedings after which we will file an application challenging the verdict,” he said.
For his part, LSB Chairman Lawrence Lecha said he is not aware of the investigations.
