Seminar on energy efficiency to be held this week

The Energy Affairs Department, with support of DANIDA, will on Monday March 4th, hold a half day seminar on Energy Efficiency in the Building Sector, which will also encompass the launch of an Energy Efficiency Website and Energy Efficiency Booklets.

The reason behind this seminar is that the Energy Affairs Department has recognized that energy efficiency and conservation is crucial as it has the potential to reduce energy costs and promote economic and environmental sustainability.

“It also reduces energy consumption and energy demand per capita and thus offsets the growth in energy supply,” said a document from the Department.

The Energy Efficiency in the Building Sector project has been initiated to promote good practices of energy-efficient building designs and energy-efficient operations in future building designs. This project also includes energy efficiency guidelines in the development of building regulations as well as to increase knowledge and skills of architects, engineers, policy makers and technicians on energy efficiency in the building sector.

According to the press statement, Botswana’s energy consumption has grown considerably and energy demand will continue to increase as the population and economy grow. These developments give rise to concerns over the security of supply, hence the government remains committed to implementing both long and short term programs to ensure that there is reliability of energy supply. However, the sector has great potential for energy efficiency improvement in terms of both design and operation.

This event, which will be held at Gaborone Sun starting at 0800hrs, will be graced by the Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Resources, Ponatshego Kedikilwe, as the guest of honour.
