State spends big on futile legal pursuits

The government blew more than P17 million in legal fees on high profile futile cases, documents presented before Parliament show. 

Investigations by The Telegraph show that the Attorney General in some of these cases was forced to beg for out-of-court settlements and even withdrew charges. 

Official figures gleaned from a document presented before Parliament entitled “Outsourced Payments 2019-2022 (January to December of each year)” shows that among the futile cases that the government spent P17.5 million in legal fees involved former President Ian Khama, his brother Anthony, former Directorate of Intelligence (DIS) Director General Isaac Kgosi, DIS agent Welheminah Maswabi, Letsweletse Motshidiemang (decriminalisation of homosexuality) and Estate Construction.
