Last week, residents of Tonota Village in the Central District, were left in shock after a 27-year-old man allegedly raped a 66-year-old woman, then murdered her before committing suicide a kilometer away from the scene. The Station Commander of Tonota Police Station, Reuben Mphoeng, confirmed to the Telegraph that sometime last week, they received a report about an elderly woman who was found dead in the fields of Gobosholo farms, which is on the outskirts of Tonota Village.
It was later determined that she had also been raped.
“We received the report from the husband of the deceased who told us that he found his wife dead in the fields where she was tending to her crops,” Mphoeng said.
He went on to state that after they immediately attended to the scene only find out that the woman had been murdered, with possibilities of rape. They then tracked the suspect and found him hanging from a tree only a kilometer away from the scene of the incident.
Mphoeng said that it is not the first time that the perpetrator allegedly committed this kind of offence, adding that he had another case to answer in which a 49-year-old woman was also raped and assaulted last year.
“We do have such incidents, but they are very scarce in our area,” Mphoeng told the Telegraph.
