The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has enjoyed undisputed popular legitimacy and substantial stability since Botswana attained political independence in 1966. It was only in 2010 that the BDP experienced its first ever split.
The split occurred when scores of BDP members led by four MPs established the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) with all the hype that seem to suggest that indeed the BDP’s rule was coming to an end as there is an end to everything.
