President Duma Boko’s first order of business after assuming office was to calm civil servants who were gripped by the jittery, stomach-drop fight-or-flight response to his shock election victory. The government enclave was bracing for a wave of departures, amid rising fears among senior civil servants that they and their work will be targets of the new Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government.
“We are going to operate on merit. Merit doesn’t care whether you like me or you don’t, merit doesn’t care whether you are my friend or not, merit speaks for itself at all times so let’s all operate on merit and let it speak for itself”, Boko said.
