The Botswana Housing Corporation will, in line with its value of Corporate Social Responsibility, and in conjunction with the Botswana Association of the Deaf (BOAD) host a sign language training workshop for out of school youth, Government employees, Parastatals, Media practitioners and sign language interpreters.
The Corporation resolved to support this event financially, having considered the challenges faced by the Deaf Community in Botswana in so far as understanding and comprehending spoken languages is concerned, as well as the need to provide the necessary care and support to organisations that play a significant role in the development and empowerment of people living with disabilities.
The targeted training, which will run from the 16-18th November 2011 at the Maharaja Conference Centre, seeks amongst other things, to equip the target groups with sign language skills in order to break the language gap between the Deaf and Hearing people, as well as to popularize sign language within the community.
The Assistant Minister for Education and Skills Development, Hon. Keletso Rakhudu is expected to officially open the training on the 17th November 2011. Also expected to grace the event is the President of Zambia National Association of the Deaf.
