Tsiane to represent Africa at Commonwealth Gender Action Group

Botswana’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs (MLHA), Segakweng Tsiane, has been appointed Chairperson of the Commonwealth Standing Committee of Experts for the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Commonwealth Plan of Action on Gender (CPMGP) on behalf of the Africa Region.

Although the appointment was announced today by the Principal Public Relations Officer at the MLHA, Lebogang Bok, it is said to have taken effect last month. In addition, it was stated that it would be for the year 2009/2010 after which it is expected to rotate to the Asian region.

“The role of the group chaired by Mrs. Tsiane will be to develop a monitoring tool for the implementation of Commonwealth plan of action for Gender and to track progress being made by the Commonwealth member states on issues of gender,” Bok said.

Some of the issues are gender equality, gender mainstreaming as well as the involvement of women in decision making.

The Committee, whose representation is drawn from the four regions of the commonwealth, will be expected to report progress on its activities to the Commonwealth Ministers of Gender, who are mandated to provide further guidance to the committee of Experts.

It emerges that Tsiane has already attended the Commonwealth Forum for Gender machineries and another on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) last month in New York.
