Woman hits three stores in one day

Security Guards at Riverwalk Shopping Complex arrested a 21-year-old woman for stealing clothes worth P543 from three different shops.

Paphidzani Gumbalume, who is unemployed and from Mafitlhakgosi Ward in Tlokweng, was arrested on November 20, 2006 charged with three counts of theft for stealing clothes worth P249 from Options Stores, P60 from Cash Bazaar and P234 worth of clothes from Identity Shop.

Constable Batisani told the court that Gumbalume stole all the clothes in one day but was arrested after failing to produce the receipts.

Before passing the sentence, Kgosi Motse Sebele told the court that the accused planned for the crime before going to steal.

In mitigation, Gumbalume asked the court not to send her to prison because she was taking care of her grandmother.

Sebele sentenced her to three months in jail wholly suspended for nine months.

In another case, Cannon Shumba, 25, and his partner, Sharon Govero, 21, both from Zimbabwe, pleaded guilty to charges after being found in possession of suspected stolen goods worth P652.

The two colluded and stole goods, including Red Bull drinks, milk and other assorted goods at Choppies at Maruapula.

Constable Ditiri Phirinyana told the court that members of the SSG patrolling team were patrolling around Maruapula Shopping Complex and saw the two running from the Choppies Shop while being chased by a mob.

Phirinyana said when apprehended, the two admitted stealing from Choppies. The Corolla getaway car they were running into was searched by the police and more suspected stolen goods were recovered from the car. Shumba and Govero failed to produce receipts for the new clothes found in a bag inside the car. Clothes belonging to Jet Stores were also recovered from the vehicle.

Kgosi Sebele sentenced each of them to one year in jail wholly suspended for three years.
